![]() From 1547, however, a Commons Journal survives, and, parallel with the formation in the Lords of the main Parliamentary records under Bowyer and Elsynge, separate series of domestic records of the Commons began to accumulate, of Petitions and Papers (from the reign of Elizabeth I), of Return Books of Elections (from 1625) and of Minute Books of Committees (from 1623). Initially, in the Middle Ages, it could be said that no formal records at all were made of the domestic proceedings of the House of Commons. Meanwhile, a second parliamentary archive, the records of the House of Commons, had been forming in another part of the Palace of Westminster. The contents of some were given still wider currency in the 18th century as certain Bills and Papers began to be printed, and when, in 1767, the Lords ordered the printing of their Journals. Here the principal records of the Lords remained from 1621 to 1864, being available throughout this period for inspection by the public. Petitions and many other forms of Papers coming to the Lords were carefully filed extensive series of rough Minutes and of Committee Proceedings were preserved and, not least in importance, the records were assigned a permanent home at the south west corner of the Palace of Westminster, in a moated building (still surviving, and open to the public), the 14th-century Jewel Tower. Under these diligent and scholarly men the Lords archive took its modern form. A more business-like administration began with the advent of two Clerks in the 17th century, Robert Bowyer (1609–1621) and Henry Elsynge (1621–1635). It seems, however, that the office was somewhat haphazard in its methods Cardinal Wolsey, for instance, when Lord Chancellor, is said to have removed all the Acts and Journals relating to one session. ![]() In addition to the class of Original Acts already mentioned, the clerks preserved Journals of the House of Lords, now surviving from 1510, Petitions from 1531 and Bills from 1558. ![]() Since then, this series has been preserved continuously among the records of the House of Lords.īy 1509, the Clerk of the Parliaments and his assistants (today known collectively as the Parliament Office) had hived off from Chancery, and in the course of the 16th century this newly independent Lords office gradually expanded and formalised its record keeping. The archive of the House of Lords originated in March 1497, when the then Clerk, Master Richard Hatton, having prepared the Parliament Roll for that session for transfer to Chancery, retained in the House of Lords the complete series of sixteen enacted Bills, or Original Acts, from which he had made the enrolment. The archives also oversees records management for Parliament, has an active outreach programme and frequently appears on radio and TV programmes. ![]() Its public search-room is open from Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 16:00, and is free to the public, although appointments to visit must be made owing to limited seating space. Some of the most important constitutional records of the United Kingdom are stored by the Archives, including the Petition of Right (1628), the Death Warrant of Charles I (1649), the Habeas Corpus Act 1679, the draft and final Bill of Rights (1689), the Slave Trade Act (18), the Great Reform Act (1832), and successive Representation of the People Acts. Over three million records are held by the archives in the Victoria Tower of the Palace of Westminster on 5.5 miles of shelving. The present title was officially adopted in November 2006, as a change from the previous title, the House of Lords Record Office. The Parliamentary Archives of the United Kingdom preserves and makes available to the public the records of the House of Lords and House of Commons back to 1497, as well as some 200 other collections of parliamentary interest. Rolls containing Acts of Parliament in the Parliamentary Archives at Victoria Tower, Palace of Westminster Best rule of thumb to measure the right size is to make sure that the rug touches the front legs of all of your furniture. You want to avoid the look of "floating furniture" with the proper rug size. Rugs are the best way to ground your furniture and make a room feel cozy and complete. Typically the lowest frame should hang 4-8” above the top of the furniture, and the highest frame should be at LEAST 4” from the ceiling/moulding. ![]() If you’re hanging frames above a sofa or credenza, you can hang your photos anywhere between 57”-66” on center depending on the height of the furniture and height of your ceilings. what if I'm hanging my art above furniture? Your guests might not see that you did this on purpose, but will be sure to comment on how great it looks! See the photo of my living room as an example. Darker colors should go closer to the left and to the bottom and lighter colors should be at the top and to the right side of your gallery wall. So, when hanging artwork, keep in mind that hanging heavy/dark/large frames on the left and bottom is preferred. Gallery walls are all about proportions, so if you're decorating a wall with extra high ceilings or lower than average ceilings, you can fudge the 57" slightly higher or lower to make it look best on your wall.Īlso, when hanging gallery walls, the human eye naturally likes to see more "weight" at the bottom and lighter at the top, this aesthetic is found in nature all the time. If you have relatively similar sized frames, start with the center frame at 57" on center and space the rest out from there. If you have a large focal piece (like in my photo) hang it 57” from floor on center then space out the rest based on the first photo. ![]() Hammer your nail into the wall at 65"H How to measure gallery wall heights: Picture frame = 20"H x 16"W (hanging vertically) Do the math and find out where to nail into the wall Measure the distance from the top of the frame to where the wall bracket on the frame is (typically 1"-3" depending on size of the frame) (y)Ĥ. Measure your picture frame height and divide in half (x)ģ. ![]() 57" is average eye level and on-center means the very center of the photo frame. The best rule of thumb for hanging photos is to hang them 57" on-center. When a photo is hung too high it makes your room look shorter than it actually is and throws off the proportions of the room entirely. Ahh, the old question of where to hang the picture on the wall. I've noticed some people tend to hang photos too high or too close to the ceiling. ![]() At times, it just seemed to make the man too super-human and swell-and that is a bit of a problem because the real life Lindburgh was a very, very flawed man. This is a film that practically deifies Charles Lindburgh because of his amazing solo flight across the Atlantic (from New York to Paris). Photographed in CinemaScope and WarnerColor and backed by Franz Waxman's beautiful music, the film effectively captures the pioneering spirit of the era and the hero's ultimate achievement since he takes off, that day, from Roosevelt wet field, and clears telephone wires at the end of the runway. Stewart gives an able portrait of a brave pilot who attains legendary status, emphasizing the intention and dominant resolution to fly nonstop 5,810 kilometers (3,610 miles) across the Atlantic. Still, he managed to stay conscious enough to keep the monoplane from crashing and landed at Le Bourget Aerodrome, near Paris, 33 hours and 30 minutes after leaving New York. A busy schedule and an active mind kept Lindbergh up all of the previous night. The record-setting flight proved not only to be a fight with the elements and a test of navigation, but also a long battle against fatigue. In his efforts to cut off the plane's weight, any item considered too heavy or unnecessary was left behind. ![]() From it there, emerges an awareness of a clever, firm but truly humble man who tackles a task with resolution, plans as much about it as he can, makes his decisions with courageous finality and then awaits with only one thought in mind, to get to Paris. But it is James Stewart's performance (controlled to the last detail) that gives life and strong, heroic stature to the principal figure in the film. Even though Wilder has bravely put it upon the screen in a calm, unhurried fashion, it comes out as biography of intense restraint and power. ![]() Lindbergh's claim to fame was doing something that many had tried and failed. His equation is simple: less weight (one engine, one pilot) would increase fuel efficiency and allow for a longer flying range, but with so much risk. But there is superb determination of the ordeal of a brave and talented pilot decided to fly alone. No action is depicted in the trip, only some flashbacks to break up the monotony of the long flight. Stewart dignified the portrait of one of the greatest adventurers in the air the world has ever know, departing, in a highly modified single engine monoplane, from Long Island, New York to Paris, France. ![]() Louis." Although the lengthy internal monologue employed during the journey may be disappointing to an audience, the truth is that it helps keep the picture focused tightly on its essential point. As a tribute it is eloquent enough and, although a few nice liberties may have been taken with historical fact, the motion picture describing the detailed odyssey before and after the Paris flight on May 20-21 in the monoplane "Spirit of St. Louis" is Billy Wilder's film tribute to one of the best figures in aeronautical history, remembered for the first nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in May 1927 with James Stewart (a little too old for the part) playing Charles Lindbergh. ![]() In between that, I let the warm shower run over my eyes for a while and then give my lids a massage. For me, I'm still not on the right track, but I only do the compresses every once in a while. I know I tried for a good 3-4 days before I couldn't tolerate it anymore. One thing I feel I should say in this thread is that I've heard on a few occasions that when starting a compress routine, it can get worse before it gets better because at the start, you end up releasing a lot of gunk that has been blocking the meibomians, into your eyes. Like you guys, I've been told it's the best thing I can do, but I'm not convinced. I end up in a cycle of not seeing any improvement, trying the warm compresses again (microwaved rice bag), 5-10 minutes later, my eyes are messed up for between 24 and 48 hours. Hey, lots of echoes in here, but I've been the same. Has anyone else been told they can use doxy forever? Because if that's my only option I'm afraid that's what I'll have to do. ![]() So I gave it a few days on the drops and doxy, and did a warm compress last night for less than 5 minutes. prescribed the FML and doxy and insisted that I do the warm compresses. The only reason I went is because I could see the toothpaste-like secretions in a magnifying mirror and knew that wasn't healthy. My eyes were feeling FINE before my latest Dr. I'm currently on FML drops and doxycycline (and also omega 3 supp's) I know the drops are short term but can the doxy be forever, if it helps me? I don't know what else to do. What is wrong with me? Why does every doctor say this is the best treatment but it makes me WORSE? I've posted about this before and sound like a broken record, I know. I'm very careful to make sure the compresses don't exceed 40C/104F. I've tried warm compresses on the advice of several Dr's over the years and EVERY SINGLE TIME, my eyes feel so much worse for at least a day or so afterward. And even though they’re quite cheap, using them regularly will end up being expensive compared to a reuseable product. However, these packs aren’t particularly environmentally friendly as they can’t be recycled or reused, so I’ll still be mostly sticking to my wheat and rice bags. If you’re wondering, all of these ingredients are very safe and non-toxic, with the biggest health risk being burning yourself with the heat. You also can’t use it in more than one go, as you can’t get the oxygen out of the bag once you’ve exposed the heat pack to air. The inside of a heat pack I bought from Daiso looks like this after 6 hours, with a pad of black activated carbon and brown iron(III) hydroxide:Įnough heat is produced to keep the heat pack warm for hours – my heat pack was still warm after 10 hours! Once the iron powder in the pack has all been converted to iron(III) hydroxide, the pack is finished and can’t be reused unless you reverse the reaction with some fiddly chemistry, which is probably not worth it.īecause the reaction starts as soon as oxygen hits the iron and water in the heat pack, you have to keep the pack sealed until you’re ready to use it. ![]() The bags also often contain salt which acts as a catalyst to speed up the reaction, and vermiculite and activated carbon which can help distribute water and oxygen more evenly for a more sustained reaction, as well as insulate the reaction and trap the heat in the heat pack. The product itself contains iron powder and water but no oxygen, so the reaction can’t proceed until the sealed bag is open and oxygen from the air can work its way through the holes in the pack to reach the other reactants. This oxidation process is pretty much the same as what happens when iron rusts. Iron + oxygen + water → iron(III) hydroxide + heat These heat packs work thanks to a heat-releasing (exothermic) chemical reaction that starts when you expose the porous pack to oxygen in the air.ĤFe (s) + 3O 2(g) + 6H 2O (l) → 4Fe(OH) 3(s) Δ H < 0 Here’s the science behind how they work!Īir-activated eye masks work the same way as the air-activated heat packs called kairo that are incredibly popular in Japan, especially in winter.
